OASIS - READER COMMENTS
DEFINITELY
MAYBE (1994)
David Milazzo -
First off I want to
say that I enjoy your musical reviews very much; The effort you've put in shows
through and I appreciate it. I generally agree with most everything think you've
written, but I must take issue with a couple things regarding my two of my
favorite three bands: The Beatles and Oasis (the other being the Smiths, which I
would be interested in reading your opinion of them). I'll list them separately
as follows:
I believe your reviews are spot on for every album but
Definitely Maybe. You heap on praise for the album, yet give the album only
an eight. From what I could see your two major criticisms were 'Shakermaker' and
the fact that the dynamics were lacking.
With Shakermaker you do anoint a 'Skip It' at the beginning
of the review, yet later you go on to say "'Shakermaker' takes the plagiarism
thing a little too far, but it is still rather enjoyable if you are willing to
overlook such blatant thievery." I personally believe that while it is one of
the weaker tracks, it is a catchy tune and certainly not a track in which I skip
over. You also acknowledge 'Cigarettes and Alcohol' as being a great song while
also pointing out its blatant thievery of 'Bang a Gong.' I too agree that it is
one of the album's highlights, but I also tend to think that the pilfering of T.
Rex's riff was just as obvious as the 'Shakermaker' melody.
Ian's Music Reviews - I'm not sure
exactly why, but Definitely Maybe just doesn't grab me the same way that
Morning Glory does. The songwriting on Definitely Maybe is (to my
ears anyway) inferior to that of Morning Glory, and the production is
repetitive, unimaginative, and lacks dynamics. Sure, it does the "loud, abrasive
rock 'n roll" thing very well, but I feel that these "rock 'n roll" qualities
come shining though just as well on the more varied Morning Glory.
Actually, I think that Morning Glory does it even better, because the
loud bits come across as more powerful - the band isn't playing at full volume
constantly, so when they do crank it up, the overall effect is more powerful and
emotive. As far as 'Shakermaker' is concerned, I'm still not very keen on the
track, and the plagiarism is just too blatant to ignore. Yes, 'Cigarettes and
Alcohol' is almost as ripped-off, but to me the big difference is that
Cigarettes only rips off a guitar riff, while Shakermaker plagiarizes an
incredibly well-known melody directly from another song without batting an eye.
I still say skip it, although I can understand its appeal (catchiness, energy,
etc...).

Adrian Denning - nah mate.
history will show the new oasis as insignificant. Heathen Chemistry will be
shown as the last oasis album with GOOD noel gallagher songs! plus, 2005 will be
the year coldplay have the biggest selling album since U2, or whatever. presales
of their album alone indicate it will be the biggest of the decade. It doesn't
deserve it, and the press are slagging it for reasons that could equally apply
to the first two coldplay albums, which I slagged, but happen to believe their
new album would get an 8/10, which is still not a classic record, but better
than i rated the first two, and got an awful lot of stick for. Your review
for the new oasis platter reeks of following what everybody else has said about
it! that aside, keep on plugging, cos I love your site.
Ian's Music Reviews - Thanks for
writing. I'll be the first to admit that I have a huge Oasis bias, so you're
probably right when you say I'm overstating the greatness of the new album.
However, I do really love the new album, and I honestly believe it's the best
thing they've done in a really long time. Maybe not "life changing," as you said
in your review, but it's still quite good. After reading your review again, I
have to say that you're dead on about Liam's voice. He sounds good on some
songs, but on others he sounds really weak.
